Tambaba beach holds nude surf competition

The fifth Tambaba Naturist Surf Open was held this weekend, attracting new people to naturism, and mainstream jornalism to the beach. We've translated an article from Globo Esporte, the sports news of the country's dominant TV network.

A TV clip from SBT,  perennial second-place broadcaster, can be found here (there may be an ad before the video starts). Although as we recently published, Brazilian TV censorship rules now consider non-sexual nudity to be proper for all ages, the network chose to blur the competitors' "naughty bits". Globo just picked photos taken from an angle that revealed only the surfing.

For our Brazilian naturist readers, SBT has another offereing of interest: "A Brazilian is victim of fraud every 16 seconds."

Over 40 'nudies' vie in Tambaba Naturist Surf Open

Seeking freedom and a tie to nature, surfers gather at the Tambaba nudist beach to compete in a naked surfing event

Seeking freedom and a tie to nature, over 40 "confirmed nudies" gathered at Tambaba Beach, Paraiba, to attend the 5th Tambaba Naturist Surf Open, held this weekend. At the event, which by the way is beyond unusual, the athletes competed in the competition's three classifications using only a colored shirt so that the judges could identify them from the beach..

The tournament featured competition in the categories Local for local beach goers, Open with no age limits, and the Expression Session, for surfers who like to innovate on the board.

For surfer Edson Filho, who had practiced the 'modality' since his teens and competed in the Local category, the main difference between nude and normal surfing is the sense of freedom that comes when the athlete has no clothes.
"The connection to nature is extreme. You feel freer and that's great. Early on, surf wax bothers a little, because it abrades the skin and causes rashes in some cases. But after you get used to surfing naked it is one of the best things in life," said Edson Filho, who also has played some editions of Paraibano Surfing Championship.

Another who prefers the naturist modality is Reginaldo Filho, age 9. The little athlete, participating in the event for the second time, was taken by his father to Tambaba beach and fell in love with the sport.

"I was embarrassed to undress the first time my father brought me. But now it's epic. You get less constrained, so I'd rather surf without clothes," said Reginaldo, who qualified for the semifinals of the Local category.

The first edition of the Tambaba Open was held in 2008, during an international naturism congress, which occurred on the Paraíba beach. According to the competition's coordinator, Carlos Santiago, the tournament was so successful that the Brazilian Confederation of Naturism has plans to promote the Brazilian Championship of Nude Surfing.
"There are naturist surfing exhibitions around the world. However, only here in Tambaba is there a competition that is conducted along the lines of the official World Surfing Federation. Our event was so successful that the Confederation wants to organize a Brazilian Championship, involving the other nude beaches of Brazil. As we are accustomed to innovate, we of the Paraíba Naturist Federation will be organizing surfing classes here at Tambaba surfing in the summer," said Carlos Santiago.
